Techniques used at the beginning and end of the story on page 90 ("A Perfect Day for a CARNIVAL"):

The beginning (paragraph 1):

Weather and environment description: It was a cloudy summer day; not what you would expect after last night’s storm. The author immediately sets the atmosphere, contrasting a clear day with yesterday's storm.

Direct speech: "I don’t think you'll need that!" I told Rachel, looking at her huge green and pink spotted umbrella. Dialogue enlivens the narrative and adds personality to the characters.

End (paragraph 4):

Direct speech: "Who would have thought ... that a sudden downpour would be good luck!" and "Without it, you wouldn't have spotted my special umbrella!" The dialogue highlights the irony of the situation and ends the story on a positive note.

Description of feelings: Dripping wet but relieved ... Briefly but succinctly conveys the emotional state of the characters after experiencing the excitement.

Beginnings...

1.
It was the last evening of the music festival and it had been raining for two days non-stop. "I've had a great time, but I'm really looking forward to going home and getting warm and dry!" I said to my friends.

2.
You know when you get that feeling that something terrible is about to happen? Well, on my way to the airport to catch a flight to Spain last year, I felt extremely nervous and worried for absolutely no reason at all.

3.
One afternoon while I was on holiday with my friend Dave, we went for a long walk in the hills above the town. I was just enjoying the peace and the sound of the wind rustling softly in the trees, when suddenly we heard a very strange noise.

...Endings

A.
When we finally got off the plane, I felt quite calm. Once we were safe inside the airport terminal, however, I began to shake uncontrollably as I remembered how uneasy I had felt before getting on the plane earlier that day!

B.
Safely sipping hot tea in our new friends' tent, we finally stopped shivering and began to see the funny side of what had happened. Amy looked at me and said, laughing, "I thought we were comingto a festival, not a disaster zone!"

C.
We finally arrived back at our apartment, exhausted and gasping for breath. We were so relieved to be back, but would we ever find out what it was that we had seen?

1 → B
2 → A
3 → C

Analysis of techniques:

The beginning of the 1st:
• Technique: description of the weather and the situation (It had been raining for two days non‑stop), direct speech (I said to my friends).
• Effect : creates a contrast between discomfort (rain) and positive emotions (fun at the festival), sets a homely, realistic tone.

End of B:
• Technique: description of feelings (finally stopped shivering), direct speech (Amy looked at me and said, laughing ...).
• Effect : shows relief and transition from stress to humor, emphasizes friendship and the ability to laugh at troubles.

The beginning of the 2nd:
• Technique: addressing the reader (Do you know when you get that feeling...?), creating mystery / tension (I felt extremely nervous and worried for absolutely no reason at all).
• Effect : engages the reader, arouses curiosity: What's going to happen? Creates a premonition of trouble.

End of A:
• Technique: description of feelings (I felt quite calm, began to shake uncontrollably).
• Effect: reveals the irony of premonition — nothing terrible happened, but the body's reaction was delayed. Emphasizes the power of intuition.

The beginning of the 3rd:
• Technique: describing the environment and feelings (enjoying the peace and the sound of the wind), creating mystery / tension (we heard a very strange noise).
• Effect: first creates an idyllic picture, then abruptly breaks it with a riddle, forcing the reader to wonder: what is that sound?

End of C:
• Technique: describing feelings (exhausted, gasping for breath, relieved), creating mystery (would we ever find out what it was that we had seen?).
• Effect : leaves the reader in suspense, makes them wonder what happened. Enhances the impression of the story.

The most interesting combination is 3 → C. It uses contrast techniques (peace → anxiety) most effectively and retains the intrigue until the very end. The open ending makes you think and makes the story memorable.

(It had been raining for two days non-stop), прямая речь (I said to my friends).

(Amy looked at me and said, laughing ...).

(You know when you get that feeling ...?), (I felt extremely nervous and worried for absolutely no reason at all).

Конец A:
(I felt quite calm, began to shake uncontrollably).

• Техника: описание окружения и чувств (enjoying the peace and the sound of the wind), создание тайны / напряжения (we heard a very strange noise).

• Техника: описание чувств (exhausted, gasping for breath, relieved), создание тайны (would we ever find out what it was that we had seen?).

Write the beginning and ending of a story entitled Nightmare at the Festival. How did you make them interesting? Compare with your partner.

Beginning:
The music pounded through my chest as I pushed my way through the crowd at the Summer Sound Festival. Sweat and the scent of fried food hung thick in the air. It was supposed to be the best night of the summer. Then, just as the headliner’s intro started, the lights went out. Not just on stage — everywhere. The entire field was plunged into complete, unnatural darkness. A few people laughed nervously, but a cold shiver ran down my spine. This wasn’t part of the show.

Used techniques:

Description through the senses: sound (music pounded), smell (scent of fried food), touch (sweat, cold shiver). Immerses the reader in the atmosphere.

Creating tension / mystery: a sudden transition from fun to darkness (the lights went out), a hint of something supernatural (unnatural darkness), the physical reaction of the hero (cold shiver ... spine). Sets an alarming tone.

Contrast: the expectation of the best night of summer vs the sudden frightening reality. Enhances the effect.

Ending:
Dawn was breaking as we stumbled out of the festival grounds, our clothes torn and faces pale. We looked at each other, too shaken to speak. Had it all been a mass hallucination? The police were already there, questioning the dazed crowd, but no one could explain what had happened during those three lost hours of darkness. I glanced back one last time. The empty stage stood silent under the rising sun, but I could still hear that terrible, distorted scream echoing in my head.

Used techniques:
Description of the environment and feelings: time of day (Dawn was breaking), appearance (clothes torn, faces pale), emotional state (too shaken to speak). It shows the consequences of the experience.

Rhetorical question:
Had it all been a mass hallucination? It makes the reader think and come up with their own version.

Creating mystery / tension: what had happened during those three lost hours of darkness, I could still hear that terrible ... scream. The ending remains open, a terrible memory haunts the hero. The story doesn't get a clear explanation, which makes it more memorable.
